New Bedford has extensive maritime death records that set it apart from most Massachusetts cities. The city's deep history as a whaling and fishing port means the Death Index includes records of deaths that occurred at sea when the vessel was registered out of New Bedford or when the deceased was a New Bedford resident. These records are particularly valuable for researching 19th century maritime deaths.

New Bedford Maritime Death Records

New Bedford's history as a major whaling and fishing port gives its death records a unique character. In the 19th century, New Bedford was one of the busiest whaling ports in the world, and hundreds of men died at sea on voyages that departed from New Bedford harbor. Many of those deaths were recorded locally.

The Death Index for New Bedford may include records of deaths that occurred far from the city, because the filing obligation followed the ship's home port or the deceased's place of residence. The New Bedford Whaling Museum holds crew records, ship logs, and other materials that can help identify deaths that didn't make it into the official city records.

Under MGL Chapter 46, the state has required death registration since the mid-1800s. But maritime deaths in the earlier period often went unregistered or were recorded inconsistently. The State Archives free digital images cover 1841 to 1924 and may include some maritime entries, but coverage can vary.

The New Bedford Free Public Library has a strong local history collection with historical newspapers, city directories, and reference materials that supplement the official death records. Their staff can help guide you to the right resources for maritime research.

What New Bedford Death Certificates Contain

New Bedford death certificates follow the standard Massachusetts format required by the state. Each certificate shows the deceased's full name, date of birth, date of death, place of death, cause of death, and manner of death. Manner of death is classified as natural, accident, homicide, suicide, or undetermined.

Other required fields include the parents' names, occupation, Social Security number, and method of body disposition. For maritime deaths, the place of death may be listed as a specific ocean location or as the name of a vessel.

Certified copies carry the City Clerk's official seal and are legally valid for probate, insurance, and property transfers. Section 12 of MGL Chapter 46 governs the issuance of certified copies in Massachusetts. Section 2A covers restricted records that may require extra documentation before the office releases them to the requester.

Note: New Bedford death records filed through the city are also reported to the RVRS, so both local and state versions exist for records from 1926 onward.
